CBO Assistance Fund
The CBO Assistance Fund supports HIV prevention in schools and school communities to provide physical care or psychosocial support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). The provision of physical care and psychosocial support for OVC enables them to enroll or continue in school, and gain access to the HIV prevention education now provided by the Ministry of Education.
Through the CBO Assistance Fund, Sekolo collaborates with community groups that provide security, care and a support network for young people. The purpose of the CBO Assistance Fund is to encourage creative, community responses to HIV and AIDS. Individual communities are often better equipped to support and care for their children than external organizations, and only need financial support and guidance to make their creative responses feasible and sustainable. As community organizations are assisted in helping provide care and support to their own, the burden previously left to the extended family is eased, and the emotional support network provided by the extended family can grow as the burden of physical support is taken up by the community.
Luderitz Red Ribbon Soup Kitchen
At the Luderitz Secondary School, Sekolo Projects supports a soup kitchen for ~280 high school learners. Initiated by teachers who recognized the effects of hunger and malnourishment in their learners, the Soup Kitchen now provides a hot, hearty soup three days a week.
Sekolo Sunrise Kids – Etango Tali Piti
Sekolo Sunrise Kids is an after-school support group for orphaned and vulnerable kids from Oneshila, a township outside Oshakati. The group is also called “Etango Tali Piti” which means “the sun also rises” in Oshiwambo, the most common local language in Oshakati. The kids gather twice each week for dance and soccer activities and have monthly performances and soccer matches.
With Sekolo’s help, the Omuhaturua Primary School, is living up to the promise “Equal education for all.” Marginalised San (Bushman) learners were unable to afford the dormitory fees and were sleeping rough, outside the school grounds, without regular meals. Sekolo’s funding has enabled the learners to join their peers in the school dormitory and partake of the school meals.
At Tondoro Combined School, the AIDS Awareness Club is taking matters into their own hands. These learners have worked together to create an environment where everyone is comfortable. They are learning about HIV and spreading the message to other youth through a mini-magazine the learners are writing themselves.
