Lüderitz Cemetery

The child graveyard in Lüderitz symbolizes the desperate reality of Namibia's rising infant mortality rate. Some of the tiny graves are marked with full names and the same birth and death dates. Many though are unmarked, particularly those for the stillborn. The HIV rate in Lüderitz is higher than the national average of 22.3% due to the town's fishing and mining industries.

Across the street is the Secondary School where half the 800 students are HIV orphans. Elizabeth held a workshop with two teachers from the school to train them in HIV knowledge and provide materials for use with their AIDS Awareness clubs. We met them in the town hall, as every available room at the school is taken for class teaching, including the staff room and the school library.
